YouTube Tag Extractor: See Any Video's Tags and Hashtags
By: Kevin
YouTube tags are hidden keywords that creators can add to a video in YouTube Studio. They help describe the subject, format, and common variations of a video's topic, but viewers cannot see them on the watch page. This tool lets you inspect the tags attached to a public video and find hashtags used in its title or description.
Paste a YouTube video URL above and the extractor looks up its public snippet data. You'll see the video title, channel, thumbnail, hidden tags, and hashtags in one result. Private, deleted, or otherwise unavailable videos cannot be looked up.
Why YouTube tags are hidden
YouTube stopped displaying video tags publicly around 2018, so there is no tags section for viewers to open on a normal watch page. The field still exists in YouTube Studio, where creators can add context for their uploads. Hiding the field keeps the viewing experience focused on the video while allowing YouTube to use the metadata as one of several signals about what a video covers.
The lack of a visible list does not make tags a secret password for ranking. YouTube says tags can be useful for common misspellings, but they play a minimal role in discovery compared with the video itself, its title, thumbnail, and description. Read the current guidance in YouTube Help.
Tags and hashtags are different
Video tags are keyword phrases stored in the upload's metadata. A tag can be a single word, a multi-word phrase, or a variation someone might use when searching. Hashtags are visible words beginning with #in a title or description. Viewers can select hashtags to browse related videos, and YouTube may display up to three above a video's title.
This distinction matters when you study another video. A tag such as “beginner camera setup” should remain a phrase, while a hashtag such as #CameraTips is meant to be readable and clickable. The extractor keeps those two outputs separate so you can decide how, or whether, each belongs in your own publishing workflow.
For hashtag placement and limits, see YouTube's hashtag guidance. Hashtags should be relevant and restrained; using a long list does not make a video more useful.
How to use competitor tags responsibly
Competitor research is most useful when it reveals the language an audience already understands. Look at several videos in the same niche, compare recurring concepts, and use the extractor to spot wording you may have missed. Then make an independent decision about what accurately describes your own video.
Do not copy a competitor's tags just because they appear on a popular upload. Irrelevant metadata can create the wrong expectations and make your content harder to understand. Tags carry little ranking weight today, so relevance is more valuable than imitation. Prioritize a precise title, a useful description, a clear thumbnail, and a video that delivers what the viewer came to learn or enjoy.
Hashtags deserve the same care. Use a hashtag only when it genuinely describes the video, and check how it is used before adding it. Avoid attaching your video to a trending phrase that has no connection to its content.
How this YouTube tag extractor works
The tool sends the video ID to the YouTube Data API and reads the publicsnippet metadata. The API response can include the hidden tags, title, description, channel name, and thumbnail URLs. Hashtags are then parsed from the title and description, deduplicated without changing their first-seen casing, and shown next to the tags.
No Gemini or generative model is involved. The result reflects metadata that YouTube makes available for that video at lookup time. A missing tags field means the video has no tags returned by the API, not that the tool invented a replacement list.
Keep building your YouTube workflow
Use the extracted phrases as research prompts, then write metadata that is honest, specific, and useful to viewers. When you need fresh hashtag ideas for your own topic, try the YouTube hashtag generator next.
