How to set up Instagram auto-reply on your Linktree

Instagram auto-reply sends a link in an Instagram DM to anyone who comments on your post or reel. Set it up from your Linktree Admin, choose which comments trigger it, and write the message that goes with your link. Use it to deliver exclusive content, run a giveaway, or promote a product without replying to every comment yourself.

Set up an auto-reply

  1. Go to Instagram auto-reply in your Linktree Admin.
The Instagram auto-reply page with two active auto-replies, each showing its DM, linked product, trigger, and its sends, views, and clicks.
  2. Select Connect Instagram and follow the prompts, if your Instagram account isn't connected yet.
  3. Select + New auto-reply.
  4. Choose what triggers the DM, then select Next:
    • One specific post or reel: Sends the DM when someone comments on the post or reel you pick.
    • All posts or reels: Sends the DM for a comment on any post or reel. Available on Pro and Premium plans.
    • Next post or reel: Applies the auto-reply to the next post or reel you publish. Available on Pro and Premium plans.
Step 1 of 5 of Instagram auto-reply, asking what should trigger the DM, with One specific post or reel selected and a grid of posts to choose from.
  5. Choose which comments trigger the DM, then select Next:
    • Any comment: Sends the DM for every comment.
    • Only comments with specific keywords: Sends the DM only when a comment includes a keyword you add, like "enter" for a giveaway.
    • Check Smart match relevant comments similar to these keywords to catch misspellings and close matches, if you want. Smart match is available on Pro and Premium plans.
Step 2 of 5, Define your trigger, with Only comments with specific keywords selected, the keywords album and music added, and the Smart match checkbox.
  6. Write the message under Write your DM, and enter the Button label that goes with your link, like "Check it out".
  7. Turn on Setup public replies to add up to four public replies to comments, if you want.
Step 3 of 5, Write your DM, with a message, a button label, and the Setup public replies toggle.
  8. Select Next.
  9. Choose what the DM links to, then select Next:
    • A product or collection in my shop: Links to a product or collection in your Linktree shop.
    • Something on my Linktree: Links to a link on your Linktree. Then choose what happens when someone selects it:
      • Send them to your Linktree: Opens your Linktree with that link highlighted.
      • Skip Linktree: Sends them straight to the link's destination URL. Available on Starter, Pro, and Premium plans.
    • A new URL: Links to a URL that isn't on your Linktree.
    • Open a message to me on Linktree: Opens Messaging with a message already typed out, ready to send.
Step 4 of 5, asking what to link to in the DM, with A product or collection in my shop selected and a list of shop products to search.
  10. Review your settings and select Complete.

When someone comments on the content you chose, they get a DM from you with your link.

Fix auto-reply issues

Auto-replies aren't sending

If people comment but don't get a DM, check these in order:

  1. Make sure your Instagram account is public. Auto-replies only work with public accounts.
  2. Check the auto-reply is set to the right post or reel, or to All posts or reels.
  3. Check the trigger is set to Any comment or Only comments with specific keywords as you intended. With keywords, comments need to include those words, unless you use Smart match to catch close matches.
  4. Check you haven't reached your monthly DM limit. Your usage shows on the Instagram auto-reply page.
  5. Reconnect Instagram if the connection was interrupted. Select Reconnect Instagram on the Instagram auto-reply page.
The Instagram auto-reply page on mobile, with an arrow pointing to the Reconnect Instagram button and a message on a paused auto-reply to connect Instagram to turn the DM back on.

If someone opens your DM in a desktop browser, Instagram may show a Get Updates button instead of your button label. The link still works when they select it. To see your button label, they can open the message in the Instagram app.
